# Joe Parker-Rees

> Digital designer working across brand and product, based in London. Designs it in Figma, builds it in Next.js, Framer or SwiftUI.

Joe trained in brand and identity work across agencies in three countries and has moved into web and product, owning projects end to end rather than handing off a file. This portfolio (https://joeparkerrees.co.uk) is itself one of those builds: Next.js, Sanity CMS, developed with AI-assisted tooling like Claude Code.

## Case studies

- [Muesli](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/muesli): Granola cancelled my university Pro subscription, so I built my own.
- [HOKA](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/hoka): HOKA Together is the membership and rewards programme for HOKA's running community, made up of a mobile dashboard and a web journey.
- [Szalty](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/szalty): MyFitnessPal and Strava had a baby.
- [Glorify](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/glorify): A rebrand pitch for Glorify, a Christian devotional app, built on the letters of its name. I went back to it this year and built the system and the app out properly.

## Playground

Shorter write-ups and live experiments, each with its own page.

- [Generative UI](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/genui): I turned Muesli's design system into a generative UI one, so Claude can build each chat reply as a layout.
- [Rest](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/rest): A small break timer for the Mac menu bar. Every 20 minutes it covers the screen for 30 seconds and suggests something to look at out of the window.
- [Icons](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/icons): Over a hundred chunky, bold and slightly imperfect icons for my own tools, because most icon sets look the same.
- [NTS Status Bar App](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/nts): A small macOS menu bar player for NTS Radio, designed after Dieter Rams.
- [Can I give you my card?](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/business-card): A digital business card with a relief of my face that moves when you tilt your phone. It took me three goes to get the relief right.
- [Dither](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/image-processor): A tool with five ways of breaking an image down into a grid of marks. I also get into why some dithering methods flicker on video, and which ones I use for motion.
- [A sentence on a leash](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/trailing-text): Rebuilding the trailing text from haha.services. It's basically a queue of points, one for each letter, and most of the work was in the spacing.
- [Shadowboxing](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/shadowboxing): Shadows usually come from a light source that doesn't move, so I tried using the cursor as the light instead.
- [Proximity](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/proximity): Hover is either on or off. With proximity, elements change size and colour based on how far away the cursor is. I also look at how much it costs per frame.
- [Guy Parker-Rees](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/guyparkerrees): Translating a picture-book illustrator's energy into a website. A real client, even if he is my dad.
- [On Canvases](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/canvases): Thoughts on the 'death of the canvas', and why the next design tool needs to hold both the canvas and the prompt.
- [JoeBot](https://joeparkerrees.co.uk/playground/joebot): JoeBot is basically a GPT wrapper, and it'll tell you that if you ask. This is about everything I had to build around it after someone found the first version and drained my OpenAI balance.
